India is the top importer of defense goods in the world, and it plans to spend around $220 billion modernizing its armed forces over the next ten years.
The Indian government has recently introduced a number of initiatives to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the Indian business ecosystem, including Make In India, Startup India, Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), etc.
It has also become increasingly obvious that finding a mechanism to quickly incorporate innovation into the arms acquisition process would be necessary if India's military is to achieve its aim of self-sufficiency.
The Department of Defense wants to establish an environment that promotes technological advancement and innovation in Defence by engaging R&D institutes, academia, industries, start- ups and even individual innovators.
By involving industries such as MSMEs, start-ups, individual innovators, R&D institutes, and academia, iDEX aspires to create an ecosystem to support innovation and technological development in defence and aerospace.
iDEX will be funded and managed by a “Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO)‟ formed as a “not for profit‟ company as per Section 8 of the Companies Act 2013 for this purpose.
