Organizer Details:
Tata innoverse was started by Tata industries, to provide open innovation platform to solve challenges for various problems. By this initiative the industry is targeting to solve many real world problems by reaching out to skilled solvers internationally and also to provide them a best platform to demonstrate their ideas, skills and creativity to develop unique and best solutions to solve real world industry challenges. The best problem solvers get rewarded, and also they become trusted technology partner with Tata industries.
Problem Outline:
The power supply is often distributed via underground cables instead of overhead cables because the underground cables have a longer life span, are less dangerous for people and contribute positively to the aesthetic planning of a city or city. .
The types of cables deployed are:
PILCA cable (lead-wire insulated cable): ~ 255 km with an average age greater than 60 years
XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) cable: ~ 595 km with an average life of 15 to 20 years
Data shows that an average of 13 to 15 HV cable failures occur each year due to cable joint failures. Because of these failures, the reliability indices are affected and also cause customer dissatisfaction.
There is currently no mechanism to evaluate the health of cables and predict their remaining life. In addition, the exact location of the weak insulation is not known. Performing insulation resistance testing for each cable does not solve the problem because it does not reflect a specific or achievable result due to shutdown and human resource issues.
The main challenge here is to conduct an online assessment of the health of the cables and determine their remaining useful life as well as the location of the weak joints, without resorting to a stop mechanism.
