Problem Statement Outline:

The leather (2.5 to 25 m²) is dyed to meet customer demand for colored leather. During coloring, the leather is dyed and pigmented with binder-based colors. Most leathers are fully dyed (liquid dye as ink used for dyeing textile materials), the leather being dyed in rotation to absorb dye without forming a coating layer. The leather then undergoes subsequent pigmentation cycles that impart a softness to the surface.

There are 3 main types of leather that are dyed in our factory. -

Aniline leather - The absorbent porous leather does not go through the pigmentation phase. The dye colors the leather without producing finishing paint and thus retains the natural surface of the skin.

Suede and nubuck leather - premium cow leather that goes through the next finishing process and is then tucked or smoothed to give it a velvet-like surface. It is resistant to wear and is white or colored in nature.

The color variation on the leather surface is checked before the leather is sent to the customers. Currently, each piece of leather is deposited on the inspection bed and the color window defined in quadrants is compared to the leather inspected. The worker then visually inspects the color variations on the 4 quadrants to judge their color match. This process of color matching is based on the worker's visual ability and is subject to errors.

To mitigate the human intervention and subjectivity involved in color inspection, we need an automated online technique to inspect color variations on the leather. The technique would help us separate the different colors of leather and sort them according to the necessary corrections.
